Descripción : The aim of this work was to explore the intuitive conceptions the students from High School of Uruguay have with regard to the calculation of areas under a curve. This will also serve as the basis for a future proposal for the teaching of the defined integral. We thought that linking it with the notion of area would be the most appropriate way since we have historic arguments that allow us to infer the relevance of this perspective. Apart from this, we count on different investigations on the same topic that agree with this approach. Concerning this position we would like to know which strategies students from High School of Uruguay put at stake when they face the calculation of an area under a curve, without being previously instructed on this subject. With the aim of answering this question, 6th form high school students were given two function graphs, one parabola and one hyperbola. Then, they were asked to calculate the area of the region comprised between the curve, the axis of the abscissas and two vertical straight lines. It was observed what strategies students put at stake to carry out the requested calculation. Then, a study of these strategies was done bearing in mind epistemological, cognitive and didactic aspects as well as the investigation background. Finally, didactic recommendations were formulated for the approaching of the Defined Integral.
