Morfología y época de reproducción de Sargassum horridum (Setchell y Gardner) en la Bahía de La Paz, B.C.S., México

Abstract

The morphology variations and the reproductive cycle of Sargassum horridum are reported in three localities of Bahia de La Paz from January1983 to August 1984, two life cycles which begin at late autumn. A rapid growth is observed in winter and spring, reaching it maximum length in late spring. In summer, S. horridum starts to degenerate until it disappears in the autumn. A new life cycle starts in the late autumn. In general, the external morphology of this species shows little variation in the three areas. S horridum shows only one reproductive cycle from May to July. In these months the female plants were observed with the least number of oogonio and its maximum diameter, while the male plants show the highest number of antheridia and its small length.
