The optical properties (absorption and emission spectra) of mercaptopropionic acid-stabilized CdS nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal synthesis in aqueous solution were studied. Also, the role of 3- mercaptopropionic acid as surface stabilizing group for the growth controlled of CdS crystal was investigated. The growth temperature used was 180 0C for reaction times from 20 to 140 min. The reaction under these conditions produces CdS nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution according to the sharp excitonic peaks observed in absorption spectra. Compared with the reaction at room temperature, the hydrothermal conditions favor a higher reaction rate and shorter times for the synthesis. An appropriate control of the time and heating temperature leads to the crystal size required to obtain fluorescent labels for potential applications in biomedicine and analytical biochemistry.-
