The following piece of research focuses on the learning achievements fulfilled by a group of students at a pre University level, from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (NMS-IPN), who is faced to real problem solving situations of movement, using technological devices such as sensors (transducer devices) and graphic calculators. Aware of the society needs, the IPN has proposed a new professional profile, which is meant to contribute to the student’s new habit formation that enhances enterprising abilities, responsibility and creativity in their professional performance. That is the reason why, the “Academia Institucional de Matemáticas del NMS del IPN” is carrying out an academic program based on the “Programa de Mejoramiento de las Matemáticas” (Math’s improvement study program), which includes a set of projects that are linked all together. This work has been called “The Technology as a Tool for the Comprehension and the Use of Math”, which main purpose is the installation of Math Laboratories enriched with technology at a pre University level (NMS). These tools are meant to do some research about the learning processes influenced by the use of these technological devices. The hypothesis that guides this research is based on the beliefs that technology can help to a new use of the graphs. The theoretical background, in which this project was based, includes four aspects that keep a very tight relationship: the first one refers to the socioepistemological approach which states that the knowledge constructions must be in accordance with the modeling and the use of Math, as the language to the human being. Besides, it takes into consideration four dimensions to deal with the proposed problems; the cognitive, the epistemological, the didactic and the social one. The second aspect refers to the focus problem research: the use of graphs. After a revision, it has been identified three uses of them: the first one handles with the design of graphs using the corresponding relationship between two variables; the second one focuses graph operations and the third one refers to the graphing by means of the simulation of the physical phenomena using technology, which it is the focus of this work. The third aspect is related to the state of art in graphical aspects. In Math learning Literature there have been identified some of the conceptions that students develop when making graphs, which are related to their own interpretation and development. The four aspect is framed by the work “Tendencial Behavior of Functions” (Cordero 1998). Having drawn the frame, the following research questions were formulated: In what sense do the students get to have a global and local vision about the graphs? What knowledge do the students get to do, to say and to discuss about the slope? The learning situation, which was used, consists on doing the movement graphs of a common person who goes away from a departure point to 500 mts, and then it goes back. This person has only nine minutes to do this, but during this movement it stops four minutes. In order to give answers to the stated research questions, an “extracurricular workshop” was scheduled, which serves as a scenario to set up the different modalities of the work, the kind of activity to work with, the use of the technology and the recording of the sessions. Based on the main problem, the students could get a description of the position and the speed, discussing about the slope of the straight lines, before doing the simulation and obtain the graphs with the technology, being also were to relate the verbal representation and its simulation. They identified the intervals of speed changes. As a result of this work, we can state that students could identify from the graphs, that one straight line with fewer slope represents a lower speed and than one with higher slope represents a higher speed. In conclusion, this work contributes to understand the source of constructions made by a student from the NMS at the IPN, using technology to model situations involving movement.-
